CRESCITA 2006: ABHIVRIDDHI

7th January: The second version of the flagship event of the institute saw some major improvements happening over the previous version as the event continues to evolve with time. Crescita‘06 was organized at The Accord Metropolitan, Chennai on 4th and 5th November in association with Tata Consultancy Services. The theme of this year’s version of conference was chosen to be “Abhivriddhi: Managing Corporate Growth” and saw some prominent personalities from the Corporate World sharing their views about the several options for expansion facing the Indian industry.

The preparations for the event started much in advance with the Students Council coming into action. Students were asked not only to suggest the theme for the conference but also other details like the name, the venue and even the dates. Even though the students of PGP2 primarily managed the event with support from Faculty members, Students Council ensured that participation levels were high even from the junior batch. After many of the post and pre dinner meetings at NNAC, finally two probable themes were zeroed upon. It was either going to be “Retail: the upcoming revolution” proposed by Arun Chacko or “Organic/Inorganic Growth Strategies” proposed by Senthil Kumar. Both of them made presentations to the class and the
themes were discussed upon in detail after the presentations.

However, because of the high relevance of both the themes in the present day scenario, no clear verdict could be achieved. The latter however was later on chosen through a poll among the attending members of the batch.

Once done with the theme, name had to be decided and for that purpose meeting was called upon and a lot of names were discussed upon including names from English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil and even some foreign languages. However, it was later decided to maintain the tradition that the seniors, BIM21 had initiated when they kept a Sanskrit name Karthavya for the theme of the last year’s version on Corporate Social Responsibility. A huge list of Sanskrit names meaning ‘Growth’ was made and the batch discussed elaborately on almost all of them before consensus was finally achieved on ‘Abhivriddhi’ that in Sanskrit means Cumulative Growth.

By this time, however, there were two other initiatives that had started taking shape and which later went on to add new dimensions to the already multidimensional success that the Institute has been achieving through the event over the years. The Management had approved the idea of getting ISO9001:2000 Quality Certification for the event that was put forward by Senthil Kumar of PGP2 and had also approved the proposal of hosting BIM Quest: the Business Quiz for corporate which in turn was proposed by Vijay and Muthupalaniappan.

ISO Certification needed strict procedures to be followed along with a lot of documentation work. For the same purpose student committees were formed to take care of the different activities.

Though the committees were formed on the basis of capability as well as on voluntary basis, strict norms were followed regarding the composition of each of the committee. All committees had to have a minimum number of members from PGP1 and the rule was strictly adhered to. There were committees taking care of Design, Contents, Logistics, Public Relations, Boarding and Lodging, Finance, Speaker Profiling and Sponsors. Other than these, ISO and Quest committees were also formed to take care of all the work related to their respective fields. ISO Organizational chart that was submitted with the consultant earlier also required every committee to have an ISO representative who would act as the link between the respective committee and the ISO team. Around 100 students- by far the maximum participation among the students towards a common cause- enrolled with different committees. All the committee co-ordination affairs were taken care of by the Students Council that in turn also acted as the link with the management. The Organizational chart had Prof. Sunder as the Operational Head and Prof. Sankaran as the Organizational head of the Organization, ‘Crescita’.

Soon after, the machinery that had been set up started rolling. Meetings were called upon and attended, issues raised and solved, discussions done and redone. Sponsors committee finalized upon Tata Consultancy Services as the principal sponsor who once again extended a helping hand. Other sponsors and knowledge partners included ICICI Ventures, Indian Bank, UB Group, Ernst and Group, Hindustan Zinc, Sanmar Group, TAFE, Hutchinson Essar, Sundaram Clayton, Aricent Technologies, Mafoi Consultants, ABN Amro Bank, RPG and IBM. Speakers Committee finalized the list of target speakers that included some of the very prominent names from the corporate world. Some of them accepted to grace the occasion; others declined citing other commitments on their side. Public Relations committee was already busy getting the event covered in national dailies and magazines. By this time almost all pamphlets were already ready, thanks to the splendid job done by both the Contents committee and the Design Committee. Web portal (www.bim.edu/crescita) was also designed for the event which once again was an introduction in this version of the event.

Boarding and Lodging committee in the mean time finalized the venue for the conference, lunch menu as well as the hotel for lodging for the students. Hotel Accord Metropolitan was chosen to be the venue for the conference and students were to stay in Hotel Regency. Train tickets were booked for all the students much in advance by the logistics committee who also took care of local transit both in Chennai and Trichy. This launch of the website also marked the start of the registration process for the BIM Quest. The Quest committee, other than the link already provided in the event portal, used many other innovative media like orkut.com and paagalguy.com for advertisement. On finalizing Giri ‘Pick Brain’ Balasubramanium as the Quiz Mater, invitations and posters were also sent to leading corporate houses.

While the finance committee was busy making accounts and balancing balance sheets all this time, ISO committee along with ISO representatives from all committees were going through rigorous Audits. Prof. Ramesh Venkatraman supervised the internal audit around a week before the final audit that was to be done by the officials from TUV two days before students left for the event.

Transportation was arranged even to the station and minute details were taken care of as students started for Chennai on 3rd Evening on Rock fort Express. The train journey as expected provided the eagerly awaited break as students sat in groups. Proper care was taken that nobody took his or her allotted berth. The fun that the students had on the way can very well be gauged from the results of the post event survey which threw the journey as the clear from the winner in “the most enjoyed part” segment. Such was the enthusiasm level that the authorities at Railways had some real tough time in pacifying the students. According to our reliable sources, some students had taken a wow neither to sleep nor to let others sleep before boarding the train. Surprisingly though, the train reached Chennai on time which even Logistics
team, despite superb arrangements otherwise failed to anticipate. Students had to wait for some time before the busses arrived much to the relief of the half asleep crowd. Despite the odd hours
the crowd showed “Titanic” like chivalry when ladies (there were no children, thankfully) were given priority to board the busses though like “titanic” again, there were some ‘non-ladies’ who forsome reason didn’t show faith in the rule).

Hotel was not very far off and it took just fifteen minutes to reach the place. The sight of the hotel proved too relaxing not only because of the odd hours but because of the grandeur of the sight (Not many had expected that kind of facilities). Full credit goes to the Boarding and Lodging Committee that made superb arrangements within the budget as students were made to stay in luxurious air conditioned rooms in groups of four. Everything was meticulously planned and managed. By the time students slept (though some of them didn’t ‘coz of the “TV in the room” factor), it as already five. Clear orders were given to all of them to be ready by nine and most of them followed the orders. Students left for the venue, Hotel Accord Metropolitan by busses, autos, cars and all other arrangements done by the logistics team after sumptuous breakfast at the hotel itself. By that time, few of the members of different committees had already reached and done the required arrangements which included a huge range of activities ranging from setting up “master of ceremonies” desk to adjusting projector settings for proper focus on the screen.

All arrangements were done in time and the conference finally kicked off with Mr. N Kumar, Vice Chairman, The Sanmar Group inaugurating the function. He also set the tone for the conference by highlighting the evergrowing Indian impact on global business decisions in his inaugural speech. This was followed by Prof. M Sankaran welcoming all delegates from the corporate world to the conference. Mr. Kumar Ramanathan, CEO, Hutchinson Essar South Ltd., the next speaker for the day, however could not make it to the conference because of some urgency that came up at the last second and needed his attention. He was represented by Mr. S. Murali, Vice President, who shared with the crowd how the organization has adopted innovative branding strategies to achieve the position it enjoys today in the Indian telecom market.

Mr. Natraj Subramanyan, Head GSS Operations India, ABN Amro Bank in his speech shared with audience his views about the growth in Indian context. Mr. Sunder Rajan, Director HR, Flextronics (now Aricent Technologies) then touched upon the human element of the organizations in his speech and how crucial it was for sustainable growth of any organization/country. This was followed by the lunch that was served in the hall next to the conference hall. The menu decided by the Boarding/ Lodging committee was well spread and included a good number of vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes. As students savored the food, they also indulged themselves in some much needed off the topic fun.

Mr. Terry Thomas, Partner, Ernst and Young who was the first speaker of the post lunch session was followed by Mr. E. Balaji, COO, Mafoi Management Consultants Ltd who shared the
necessity for strong base of HR processes in any organization striving for growth. Mr. Jeyakumar Janakraj, Senior Vice President, Hindustan Zinc Ltd. shared some of his experiences as a member of top management of the organization with the audience. The last speaker for the day and the most keenly followed one was Dr. T.V. Somanathan IAS, Secretary, Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Government of TamilNadu. He used humor as a tool to bring out how government initiatives were critical for economic growth and emphasized that post liberalization the role of the government had increased even further which is against the general belief.

By the time Dr. T.V. Somanathan finished with his speech, it was already time for the final round of BIM Quest. Earlier, the prelim stage which saw huge participation from teams from leading corporate houses of the country was conducted in the hall next to the conference hall. The prelims also saw some of our alumni members representing their respective organizations. Finally six teams from Infosys, Sanmar Group, Ramco Systems, ICICI Ventures, CitiBank and Sify were selected after the preliminary round which was a written screening test. The final round started amid huge excitement from the audience who were mesmerized by the tricky questions fired by the quiz master and equally sharp answers reverted by the participants. The finals were divided into four different rounds and by the end of the second round, only three of the six teams looked like in the race for the title with Infosys enjoying a handsome lead. However, the team from the Sanmar group came back strongly in the third round and the changed the complexion of the contest. The teams went into the final round with only 5 points separating them. The final round which was a quickfire one saw all the teams doing well. However, this was the round where Team Sanmar for the first time scored better than the team from Infosys and emerged as the winner.

As the infotainment came to the end, Prof. Sunder addressed the gathering and also welcomed Mr. Prashanth, the famous actor who was the special guest for the program. Prof. Sunder’s address was followed by Prize Distribution ceremony where in cheques were handed over to the winners by Prashanth. This also marked the end of the first day at the conference. The students quickly came back to the hotel and rushed out of it even faster. While some of them partied hard, others partied even harder. While some of the pictures that were taken that night can not be published for that would go against the moral norms of this magazine, others that could be published include the ones taken at Pizza Hut.

DAY 2:

The second day started at the same note as the first day with heavy breakfast. However, some students exhibited extra-ordinary ‘presence of mind’ when they stayed away from the breakfast for they feared the side effects of heavy meals; more so because of very little sleep the last night (blame it on parties other than the pizza hut types).

The day started with Prof. Sankaran addressing the gathering and welcoming the delegates. The day started with Mr. Sundara Rajan, ED, Indian Bank explaining how implementing technology at the bank has helped it grow despite ever increasing competition. He was followed by Mr. Ravi Vishwanathan, VP, Chennai operations, Tata Consultancy Services addressing the gathering and explaining how the organization has managed to grow by not only concentrating on the overseas markets but also putting due emphasis on the domestic market. He also explained how a few IT Companies have been able to put India on the world map.

This was followed by the most eagerly awaited event when Mr. Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Communications and IT and was welcomed by Dr. Jayasankaran. The minister in his special address to the students emphasized on the importance of individual’s growth to achieve the growth of the society as a whole. He also stressed on criticality of continuous learning and improvement in highly competitive environment that has emerged out of globalization. Drawing examples from his own life as a student and then as a leader, he urged students to explore the unexplored. He also demanded high degrees of commitment among the students towards their respective states and nation as a whole as the gathering keenly followed the young leader. He was presented with a shawl and memento after the national anthem.

After the tea session that followed the address by the Minister, Mr. Ram Ramakrishnan, Director, ODPL (Singapore) in his address to the gathering discussed the strategies that the organizations generally adopt for rapid sustainable growth. Mr.Sunay Mathure, Associate Director, ICICI Ventures, in his address emphasized on the criteria that the organization looked infor before deciding to fund any start up. He drew examples from many such successful ventures taken up by the organization. Mr. M.K. Perumal, AHS Manager, IBM Global Services followed this with his speech which was in turn followed by Mr. Pradipta K. Mohapatra, CEO, RPG Enterprises. Mr. P.K. Kaniappan, Senior Vice President, Sundaram Clayton then in his speech emphasized on how holding to the values and working towards customer delight is the only way to grow. Mr. Navratan Dugar, Executive Vice President, United Spirits Ltd. In his speech that followed emphasized on understanding the customer needs, likes and dislikes and then evaluating one’s capability with respect to them before drawing any growth plans.

Mr. G. Hari, COO, TAFE in his valedictory speech for the function urged the students to do what their and organization’s values allowed them to and also asked them to take on the challenges that come their way as bravely as possible. The valedictory speech was followed by the Prof. Sunder proposing the vote of thanks to everyone concerned. The stage was then taken by Santosh Kumar of PGP2, The student Co-coordinator from Student Council who for the first time officially announced that the Event Crescita had been recommended for ISO certification after the auditors found everything following the set procedures during their two day audit during the conference.

Crescita, hence became only the second event by any Institute in the country to have got this sponsorship for event management systems. The certification process is in progress and is expected toget over by first week of February, 2007.

With this the formal phase of the event came to an end as students gathered around for group snaps. As the snaps were being clicked, Prof. YLK added on to the enthusiasm with his loud cheers which are still remembered by many of the students. With this the event came to an end and students returned to the hotel and then to the college that night by the train. The event not only provided students a chance to listen to eminent leaders from industry but also provided them with a much needed break.
