KUGELMASS RESTS AT MALGUDI

22nd November, 2006: The newly founded Book Forum has been one of the most active bodies on campus in the recent past. According to our reliable sources, the forum recently conducted very interactive games for the students as a part of R K Narayan's Centenary celebrations at the campus.

Students were given brief descriptions about four of the characters of the Malgudi Days, one of the very famous creations by the legendary writer. After going through the descriptions, the students were asked to vote for their classmates that they believed resembled most with the each of characters described. Vetri Kumaran, the founder of the forum when asked about the objective of the full exercise told us that he expected an increase in the curiosity coefficients among the participants about the book and the other works by the celebrated writer because the exercise. He also told that the forum in future too would regularly hold such interactive sessions to increase awareness about the books among the students and to turn more and more non-readers into readers.

He was ably helped by a team of first years in the organizing the event that was conducted in the mess. Other than the celebrations, the Book reviews have also been happening on a regular basis at the forum. The most amazing part about the activity has been the support it has been getting from all corners. Dr. YLK expressed his full support for the activity by attending some of the reviews and providing students with the books they wanted to read.

One of our Adjunct Faculty, Prof Sridhar Natrajan went a step further by himself reviewing a book for the students wherein he took the students through the journey of 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull' by 'Richard Bach'. Known for his witty nature, the professor chose the right book to motivate the students. He quoted many lines from the text and urged the students to read the book not only because it made for a good read but also because it was only a '80 page' book with half of the pages filled with pictures. He also shared with students how he felt like a young lad waiting to test his knowledge in the corporate world when he first read the book during his college days at IIM.

WHERE PARTYING IS YET ANOTHER CHORE

22nd November 2006: While Treats and parties have always been a characteristic of post placements season at the campus, this year has seen quiet a change in the partying patterns of the students. Treats have become pretty a common feature at the campus with students always looking for excuses just to party. The prominent among all these parties have been the committee treats.

The season was started by the Finclub where in the seniors took the new recruits to Sangeetha Restaurant in Trichy. The format however changed dramatically when Bismarc’s new recruits treated their seniors at the 'Thaai'. The Syscom taking their new team of recruits out for dinner once again at the Thaii soon followed this. The most recent committee treat to happen has been that of PR-Com where, according to our reliable sources, the seniors spent lavishly to welcome their new team at the Kanappa's. However the committee that has scored higher than any other committee on this account, though surprisingly, would be Placom with the members going out on a treat almost once every fortnight.

All these treats give a very good indication of how well the students have absorbed the 'induction' module of their HR courses. Parties have been happening on other accounts as well. One such treat happened when Razik of Placom took the Placement Brochure team out for a lavish dinner at Sangam. Another grand treat was given by six of the members of PGP2 when they hosted a collective treat for their friends. The treat was later coined by the gang as 'SIX Sigma Treat'. PGP1 too had its part of fun when the batch decided to go out for a lunch at the Banana Leaf. Add to this the numerous other Birthday Treats, the parties that happen for a reason and those that happen without a reason and what one will end up with will be a calendar jam packed with treats and parties. Now this is what you call a rocking campus!!!

KALAIKOM CHEERS UP LIVES WITH 'BIM TALKIES'

22nd November 2006: The Kalaikom hit the campus with BIM TALKIES twice within this trimester. The first screening had 'Minnale' and 'DDLJ' for the students. With the rain spoiling the show, the screening was postponed to the next day in the mess. But only a few viewers turned up, as many from PGP2 didn't seem to be happy with the choice of the movies. With this background, KALAIKOM 23 planned another screening this Nov 10th.

The committee played safe this time and a poll was conducted in the mess (Click the flick types) with choices of "Sarkar", "Kal Ho Na Ho" and "Bluffmaster" for Hindi and "Rainbow Colony", "Anniyan" and "Sandakozhi" for Tamil. The polling results threw "Sarkar" and "Sandakozhi" as the clear winners. The screening started early at around 9 in the night. Special permission had been taken for the girls so that they could stay back till the end of the movie. Whistles were heard for all the high-powered dialogues of Sarkar & the fight and sequences of the "Sandakozhi". However, the mock interviews and the GDs that had been scheduled for the PGP2 students the next day spoiled the show for the committee, as viewer ship was very thin from the PGP2.

To make up for the past disappointments, the committee looks upbeat and all set to steal the show once again with their trademark show 'Foxtrot' scheduled to be held very soon. Hopefully, the schedules will be set properly the next time for the benefit of the students.

NIGHT CANTEEN ADDS SPICE TO NIGHT LIFE @ CAMPUS

22nd November 2006: Taking into consideration what Manikandan of PGP2 coins as "need to read with increased energy levels during the exams", the Mess Committee has tried to find out a solution for the problem by putting up a night canteen cum coffee bar for the students at the campus. "We had put up the proposal only a few months back and the idea has seen such a quick implementation only because the administration took keen interest in it" said Anton, a senior member of the committee on the eve of the inauguration by Dr. YLK.

With the new setup coming into existence, the old "tea on wheels at 10 0' clock" has been scrapped. Though this move has been received well by most of the students, a few blocks have expressed their desire to have both the alternatives in operation simultaneously. The canteen operates between 6.30 p.m. and 4.45 a.m. daily and provides students with a varied option of choosing among a host of refreshing drinks including Tea and Coffee.

However, the instant hit among the students has been the tomato soup which some claim is the better than even what they serve in restaurants. Light snacks like kurkure and Lays too recently have found their way into the menu of the canteen. Time and also SCORECARDS carrying CGPAs will only tell how much "energy booster" this new centre would be able to provide the students with but the centre has definitely helped in one tangible way; it has provided extra half an hour for reading to all those getting up at 5 in the morning during the exams as some students, according to our sources, have adjusted their alarm clocks to 4.30 in sync with canteen timings. "Der Na Ho Jaye, kahin Der Na Ho Jaye".

COM' CRUNCHES: SPORTSCOM

FREETHROW '06

While the boys were busy scoring goals, the girls too had their share of entertainment during the free-kick season. The throw ball tournament had three teams competing for the trophy. The teams were FURY (pgp2), Thooki-Podu (pgp1) and Utratha (pgp1).

In the first round of matches, despite a sluggish start, the team Fury scored an easy win over the team Utratha. But the other team from PGP1, Thooki-Podu gave them a tough contest in the second group match. However, even a brave effort from Thooki-Podu could not deny the 'Fury' girls the top position after the group stages with two consecutive wins to their credit.

Third and final group match was played between Thooki-Podu and Utratha. In a close match, Thooki-Podu emerged as the winner and booked a place in finals along with Fury. The finals saw the audiences in full flow, hooting and cheering for their teams. The first match of the set was started with high expectations on both the teams. However, with Fury making more mistakes, Thooki-Podu gained momentum and coupled with good team coordination soon won the first set convincingly.

Though, Fury was back in form in the second set with their star players Nandini and Jayapriya piling up points, but the enthusiasm was lost soon, and fury handed over the trophy to the Thooki-Podu team without much effort. Sportscom, as ever, did a good job with the co-ordination work and made sure that everything went on fine.

COM' CRUNCHES: QUEST CLUB

If ever, in a Quiz Competition, the question was asked "What is common between BIM, awareness, success and glory?", the answer would definitely be "Quest Club". The club has always acted as a platform to train the students of the institute to face the toughest of the questions in Quiz Competitions thereby helping them to bring glory to the college.

Of late, the club has taken several initiatives to make sure that the participation levels remain high among the students. One such initiative has been that of conducting theme based quizzes. On the eve of Onam, the club members conducted an 'Onam Special' Quiz which saw a very high participation from members of both the batches. According to our reliable sources, the club also plans to conduct a Quiz competition for the students very soon. Though the club doesn't have a formal structure unlike most other clubs and committees, the sincerity levels have been very high on the part of organizers to make sure that all those participating in "10 O' Clock" quizzes leave the Computer center (where they are generally conducted) with not only some added knowledge about their surroundings but also with broad smiles. The Club has also been receiving very good support from the administration, which has promised them all facilities that would be needed to make the quizzes even more info-taining in the future.

COM' CRUNCHES: PLACOM

Placement Committee at the campus works day in and day out to ensure good placements for the deserving students of the Institute. Last month, the committee members of both the batches along with non committee volunteers could be seen rushing for making presentations to the Corporates and inviting them to the campus in all major cities of the country. Detailed guidelines were given both by Prof. Lakshman Kumar and PGP2 Placom Members to the Students teams before the latter left the campus. Teams were assigned the cities of Chennai, Bangalore, Calcutta, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai respectively where each one of them made its share of presentations.

Earlier, Razik, PGP2 Placom Member, did an excellent job by co-ordinating the activities of all the individuals and the teams that worked for designing the Placement Brochure and the Placement CD. While Brochure team comprising of Jayachandran, Shankalan, Suprabhat and Paras, all from PGP2 worked on the aesthetics of the brochure, a team of Syscom Members of PGP1 took care of updating the Students Database for the Placement CD. This year's brochure drew it's inspiration from Fast, Exciting and Sophisticated World of F1 Racing.

With presentations over and the placements approaching, everyone at the campus is eagerly waiting for all the effort that the Placom Members have been sincerely putting in for more than an year now to bear fruits.

Freekick 2006

Trichy, 7th August: If one were to conduct a survey on Sportscom, the conclusions of the study would definitely bring out image of the brand as youthful, energetic, hard working and initiators. And as all successful brands do, Sportscom 23 with support of Sportscom 22 tried to strengthen this image further by adding yet another, and undoubtedly the most enjoyed event to their calendar, the Free kick football tournament for boys at the campus. The event saw a very healthy participation from both the batches. Having nine teams, each of 11 playing and 2 to 3 non-playing members, participating in the event definitely brings out a good picture of the enthusiasm levels the tournament was received with. Another striking feature of the tournament was that all the matches were played under the lights. The teams were divided into two groups, Group A and Group B based on the draws that were drawn in the presence of the team captains. The Group A comprised of Blitzkrieg (PGP1), Trojans (PGP2), Cavaliers (PGP2), Head Bangers (PGP1) AND Bim-Bagaan (PGP1). Having all the three tournament favourites (Blitzkrieg, Trojans and Cavaliers) in the same pool promised some real exciting matches even in the group stages that were played in league fashion with each team playing every other in the group. The relatively easier group B comprised of Penalty United (PGP2), Real Madriders (PGP2), Khaleej United (PGP1) and Marines United (PGP2)

DAY 1

Though the tournament started on 21st August, the preparations had already started much in advance with rollers being brought in for leveling the ground, Lights and generators being put up, and required equipments being bought. PGP1 Sportscom toiled hard preparing the grounds in a very professional manner. The tournament was kick-started by Prof. Ramesh who emphasized on the importance of achieving physical health as a precursor to efficient and effective work life. First match of the tournament saw two heavy weights clashing with each other, The Blitzkrieg representing PGP1 and Cavaliers representing PGP2. Barring the finals, this match received the highest viewer ship with sentiments playing their role too. Viewers were seen hooting for the teams from their respective batches. Both the teams approached the match with different strategies with Cavaliers banking on their fast paced attack featuring Jayachandran and Prabhakar on both the flanks and Blitzkrieg relying more on their midfield playmakers. Both the teams showed tremendous resolve in the match that ended with each team scoring four goals. Some of the ugly moments of the otherwise a great match included a yellow card being awarded to Blitzkrieg Goalkeeper Pushpreet for excessive appealing, after a goal was given against the team by the referee, Arun Chacko and a own goal by Razik of Cavaliers. The second match of the day was played between Penalty United and Marines United. The match appeared to be one-sided affair with Marines United maintaining a healthy 2-0 lead till last 12 minutes of the allotted 50 minutes. However, some defensive blunders from the team and some aggressive game from the Penalty United saw the latter score three goals in the dying moments of the match and take the full three points. Post match analysis by the BPL (BIM Premier League) officials brought out some startling facts like Marines United playing only 2 defenders even when they had a good 2-0 lead to defend towards the end.

Next match of the tournament was to be played between the Trojans and the Head-bangers. However, to the surprise of the officials and Match Umpire, Jagadeesh of PGP2, the team Head-bangers turned up in formals for the match. As the rulebook of the governing body, BPL didn't allow the matches to be played in formals; match could not be started on time. However, the trouble disappeared soon when Head-bangers were finally convinced to change to shorts-tees. Trojans, knowing that the goal difference could come into play in the later stages of the tournament, played only 2 defenders and ran through the game with their star striker Arun Chacko scoring 6 goals. The game ended with a score of 11-0 in favour of the Trojans.

Fourth and final match of the day was played between the Real Madriders and Khaleej United. The match provided the Real Madriders with a good training session, as Khaleej United never looked like wanting to attack. Even Christopher, a seasoned defender for Real Madriders was most of the time seen standing in the box of the opponents. The match turned out to be much more one-sided than expected with final score reading 10-1. DJ scored the only goal for Khaleej United.

DAY 2

First match of the second day was played between Real Madriders and Penalty United. The match promised to be a tough contest with both teams coming into the game with emphatic victories in their previous matches. However, Real Madriders made more of the chances that came their way and found the opponent's net twice within the first half of the match. The Midfield comprising of Pukazh and Satish provided their star striker Pravin with some very good chances and the star didn't falter. Pawan playing forward for Penalty United however couldn't make much of the little chances that came the team's way. Final score line read 2-0 in favour of Real Madriders. The second match of the day provided Blitzkrieg the win they were wanting so badly. They scored an emphatic 8-0 victory over Bim Bagaan with their striker Parthiban in a very good form. The ball hardly crossed the line towards Blitzkrieg half, leave aside testing their two men defence.

The one sided affair, however, gave way to a very well balanced match, the match everyone was eagerly waiting for. Spectators cheered as the Trojans and Cavaliers marched into the field. There was nothing much to choose between the two teams as both of them looked equally balanced on paper. While Cavaliers once again were relying on their supersonic attack, Trojans played it defensive with Arun Chacko playing as the lone forward. The other forward, Thyagu was moved into the midfield to provide more support in the middle. A defeat in this match for either of the teams could have meant an end to its chances to make for the semi-finals. Initial 15 minutes of the game saw Cavaliers mounting pressure on the Trojan line of defense. Prabhakar, Jayachandran, Shanmugavel and Varun Prasad all ran into the Trojan box every now and then. Though with difficulty, however, the Trojan defence comprising of Elango, Diwakar and Sunil put up a great show in stopping them reach Goalkeeper Arun Selavaraju's net. The complexion of the game changed soon, however, with Trojans starting to make some chances for themselves. Cavaliers felt the pressure and hence Jayachandran was forced to move into the midfield. But, Arun and Navin could not convert any of the chances they got, thanx to some perky man marking by Vivek for Cavaliers. The keenly contested match ended with a 0-0 draw with both teams still in race for semi-final spot.

The final match of the day 2 was played between Marines United and Khaleej United. Both teams were desperate to take 3 points from this match after suffering crushing defeats in their last matches. The highlight of the match was the penalty kick that was awarded to the Khaleej United. However, the chance was missed when Nabarun Paul failed to control his kick. Barring the penalty, neither of the teams came close to scoring and most of the action took place in the midfield only. The match saw some streaks of brilliance by Satish of Marines United who was always seen wanting for support in the midfield. The goal less draw left both the teams praying for some favourable results in the remaining group matches.

DAY 3

As the tournament progressed, support for the teams came in from all quarters. To the surprise of the players and audience, Prof. Y Lakshman Kumar also came down to hostels to view the matches. The first match of the tournament was played between Penalty United and Khaleej United. It was a do or die situation for the Khaleejs. Even a draw with Penalty United would have seen them out of the race for semifinal spots. However, unfortunately for them, Penalty United players found their form when they needed it most. While Lokesh at the back kept on providing the team with clearances, Manish Sharma and Bhavesh Vikramaditya looked invincible in the midfield. The pressure had its say when Manish Sharma scored after 27 minutes of play. Second half saw some good chances being created for Khaleejs but their forwards Nabarun and Kartik could not provide the finishing touches. To the disappointment of Khaleejs, Siddharth Rambadri of Penalty United scored the second goal for his team in the second half with a lucky strike from 35 yards. The final score read 2-0 in favour of Penalty United. Penalty United became the first team to move into the semi-finals with the victory. The defeat however meant elimination not only for Khaleej United but also for the Marines United. Real Madriders and Marines United played the second match of the day. Marines United, being already eliminated, was playing for a respectable exit with a victory. However, Real Madriders proved too much for them and the game ended with a score of 4-2 in favour of Real Madriders. Suprabhat, keeping the goal for Real Madriders, for the first time in the tournament conceded goals. Final Standings of the Group B looked like: 1st Real Madriders; 2nd Penalty United; 3rd Marines United; 4th Khaleej United.

The Third match of the day took place between the Cavaliers and Bim Bagaan. Cavaliers moved into the ground with a mindset of scoring as many goals as possible. They played with an out-n-out attack strategy with Sankalan being the only one guarding their own goal. Their famous attack however faced some resistance initially from the BIM Bagaan defence line. However as the defenders tired, especially in the second half, goals came in every now and then. Prabhakar top scored with 6 goals to his credit. The final score read 13-0 in favour of Cavaliers. The final match of the day was played between Head Bangers and Blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg Challenge came up with a stunning performance in the match and scored a total of 4 goals. Blitzkrieg wanted to win the match with as many goals as possible and hence the team was seen pushing for attacks and counter attacks on Bim Bagaan even in the dying moments of the game. They finally won the match 10-0.

DAY 4

No game could be played on 24th because of the interruptions by the rain. Though some members of BPL wanted to go ahead with the games, the body later took a decision of postponing the games to the next day. The top officials of the body cited water logged ground as the main reason behind their decision. Two games were played on 25th. The first match was played between Cavaliers and Head Bangers. Cavaliers destroyed whatever little challenge Head Bangers could pose. Varun Prasad did a very good job for Cavaliers who ultimately won the match 11-0. However, such was the pressure to score heavily and win the match with a huge goal difference that even a score of 11-0 didn't seem to impress the winners and some of the cavaliers team members were heard shouting and appealing excessively all through the match.

The second match was played between the Trojans and the Bim Bagaan. As expected, Trojans went into the game with the mindset of scoring as many goals as possible and played only 2 defenders. However, Bim Bagaan's resilient defence proved to be much harder a nut than what their opponents had expected it to be. Trojans were leading 7-0 with 3 minutes remaining in the match when a penalty was awarded against them. However, Arum Selvaraju, the Trojan Goal keeper, came up with a brilliant save to deny the little respect Bim Bagaan wanted to leave the tournament with. The Trojans scored one more goal in the remaining 2 minutes and won the match 8-0.

DAY 5

The last two matches of the group league stage were to be played on the day. The first match between Head Bangers and Bim Bagaan proved to be an interesting one with both the teams playing for pride. Head Bangers played their best match of the tournament and even came close to scoring on occasions. However, their effort was not enough to win the game for them and Bim Bagaan won the match easily by a margin of three goals to nil. Elancheran, Karthik, Vimal and Sumit played well through out the tournament for Bim Bagaan.

The second game of the day was a high tension one. Both the teams, Blitzkrieg and the Trojans were equally placed on points and even on goal difference. However, Blitzkrieg enjoyed a lead in goals scored. With Cavaliers already into the semi-finals, the fight was on for the second semi-final spot from the group. Even a draw would have seen Blitzkrieg through but Trojans had to necessarily win the game. As expected, the game was very fast paced with Parthiban, Giri, Aldo, Shailesh and Nikhil playing their heart out for Blitzkrieg. Their efforts paid when Giri scored what was later adjudged the best goal of the tournament from the half line. A goalkeeping error by the Arun gave Blitzkrieg the much desired lead and cushion of a goal. Trojans tried to equalize in the first half but could not find the Blitzkrieg net, much to the disappointment of their fans.

The scene changed, however, in the second half. Trojans re-entered the filed with a very attacking formation. Blitzkrieg replied by pulling in their midfielders into defence. However, it took just 10 minutes into the second half for the Trojans to equalize. Soon later, Arun Chacko scored the second one for the Trojans who eventually won the game 2-1. Trojans marched into the semi-finals and Blitzkrieg was eliminated. Their effort was however applauded by one and all. Final Standings in the Group A looked like: 1st Trojans; 2nd Cavaliers; 3rd Blitzkrieg; 4th Bim Bagaan; 5th Head Bangers.

SEMIFINALS

Both the semi-finals proved out to be much slower than expected. The first semi-final was played between the Cavaliers and the Real Madriders. The game was slow through out the 50 minutes. The 'counter attack' strategy that had worked so fine for Real Madriders in the group stages proved to be ineffective against the cavaliers’ defence spearheaded by Sankalan. Cavaliers won the game 4 goals to nil and moved into the finals. The second semi-final between the Penalty United and the Trojans turned out to be even more slower an affair. Down with injuries, Trojans however still managed to score 2 goals and won the match 2-0.

FINALS

The Finals were played on 30th of the month between the Trojans and the Cavaliers. It was a keenly contested match, a fight between the famous cavalier attack and the resilient Trojan defense. The stadium was jam packed for the finals as fans of both teams came in with the hopes that their favorites lifting the trophy. There were some attempts from both the sides to score but almost all of them were off the target, seldom testing the goalkeepers. The game, though was paced well, but lacked the speed that was seen when the two teams met in the group stages. While Cavaliers tried to attack from the flanks, Trojans relied more on their midfielders Naveen Chelliah and Mohan Raja. The jinx however was broken when Cavaliers scored through a corner kick towards the end of the first half.

Trojans tried their best to equalize in the second half but failed to go past Vivek who once again put up a good show. The match however saw some controversy creeping in when Trojans claimed that Cavaliers Goalkeeper had moved into his goal holding the ball. However, the referee of the match, Giri, was not moved by their appeals. The game finally ended with a score of 1-0 in favour of cavaliers who were declared the winners of the first ever Freekick Football Tournament. The former by three goals to nil won the third position match between Real Madriders and Penalty United. With this, the all-entertaining tournament came to an end. All credit goes to the Sportscom for making it a huge success that it was.
