BIM CELEBRATES 22nd FOUNDATION DAY

Trichy, 19th September: Shri S. Ramadorai, CEO & MD, Tata Consultancy Services and Chairman of Board of Governors of the Institute presided over the 22nd Foundation Day celebrations on 19th of August. The function was organised at MD Hall, BHEL Trichy. The students of both the batches were informed about the program a day earlier and were asked to assemble at MHD in formals the next day. This provided the students of PGP 1 with the opportunity they were longing for, a chance to show off in their newly tailored suits. As expected, huge volumes of snaps were taken even before the students could move out of hostels. Students reaching MHD well in time however had to wait or some time before they were told about the change in the chief guest’s program. His visit to MHD had been cancelled and he was to directly go to the MD Hall to address the gathering.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Ramadorai stressed upon the need for adopting a multi disciplinary approach on the part of Science, Technology and Management teachers. He also expressed optimism about the conditions prevailing in the country and called upon the budding managers to take up the entrepreneurship as their career objective. In line with his thoughts about need to encourage Innovation based ventures, the chief guest also announced that the company would consider the suggestion made by Prof. Thangamuthu, Vice Chancellor of Bharathidasan University who was also present at the function, to support a Technology management course at the Institute in coming years.

Prof. Thangamuthu’s address to the gathering followed this and the function concluded with the Prize Distribution. Chitra Dey had to walk a lot for this section of the function as she was awarded with Scholastic Prize for her ranking first in first and second trimesters of her course. Summit Bihani won the award for his performance in the third trimester. Badges were also awarded to the winners of Best Summer Project Award. Winners included Krishnakant Agrawal (ISRO), Shailender Bihani (ING VYSYA), Suresh (WEALTHMAX), Raamakrishnan (GENPACT), Aparna Renganathan (WIPRO CONSUMER CARE), Yazhini (CAVINKARE), Gopinath (GODREJ & BOYCE), Prabhakar Rajmanickam (TVS MOTORS) and Paras (TVS MOTORS).

The function was declared closed soon after as the students moved to the lawn where High Tea was served. After refreshments, the students left back to their barracks, happy and elated as their Mother Institute celebrated her Birthday.

THE RELIGIOUS FACE OF BIM

Trichy, 19 - 09 - 2006: 12’o clock in the night, the birthday boy is pulled out, to cut the cake only to have it all deposited on his face, and forced to have a midnight bath with whatever that stinks around. But a birthday was celebrated this ear in a more serene manner. It was the birthday of Lord Gnash. A spiritual atmosphere prevailed in the campus with the beautifully engraved Ganesha idol kept and worshipped in the small ‘mandap’ built for the lord in front of the mess. Bhajans were sung ever day and ritual performed with utmost devotion. Festivals don’t go without feasting our taste buds. The ‘kozhukatai’ and ‘sundal’ was served in the mess. At the end of five days, the idol was immersed in the Tiruverumbur Erumbeshwar temple’s pond.

Another religious ceremony that BIM witnessed recently was that of the harvest festival from God’s own country, The Onam. Students got up early in the morning on the day and decorated the mess beautifully. Traditional ceremonies were performed before fellow BIMites got their chance to taste traditional Kerala food as it was served by the student volunteers in the lunch but the religious feelings of BIMites are not constrained to festivals, but go beyond that. A group of temple goers have recently joined hands and formed a group that aims to explore more of the city of temples. The have even gone to an extent of creating an orkut community called “Aalaya pravaasa” for that purpose.

THE KUGELMASS JOURNEY BEGINS FROM BIM

Trichy, 10th September: Dr. Prema Nandkumar, a wellknown speaker and columnist for The Hindu inaugurated the Book Forum of the college on 16th of August 2006. Vetri Kumaran of PGP II whose wholehearted efforts have brought the Book Forum to its present healthy form later named the forum ‘The Kugelmass Journey’. The forum derives its name from the classic fiction by Woody Allen where in the character ‘Kugelmass’ can get into any piece of fiction he wishes to with the help of his magician friend.

In the function also attended by Sunder Sir, Dr. Prema tried to emphasize upon how Literature and Management subjects followed parallel tracks. She shared her
experience of around 50 years of Book Reviewing with the gathering which comprised of both PGP I and PGP II students.

The function saw the birth of a forum which has been pretty active ever since. A couple of books of relevance like ‘The Goal’ and ‘Blue Ocean Strategy’ have already been reviewed by the students of PGP II despite fully packed schedules and a host of other activities going on in the campus. The forum intends not to restrict itself to Management books and instead cover all possible fields and interests including fiction in the long run. Also, there are plans to bring in competitions like ‘Debates’ and Group Discussions.

The newly formed forum has definitely added a new dimension to the already multidimensional co-curricular activities the students here at BIM indulge in.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS

"Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again." - Jawaharlal Nehru (Speech on Indian Independence Day, 1947).

Stepping into the 59th year of our Independence, Welfarecom put up a splendid show to celebrate the Independence Day on 15th of August. All the students gathered on the Tuesday morning, to celebrate the hard won freedom, beaming with energy and filled with aspirations. After the Director, Dr. Sankaran hoisted the flag the national anthem was sung that turned the air electric as all stood saluting the flag. Looking back into the past, Director took us through the economic and social development of Mother India since 1947. He called the students of BIM to create a niche for them, and make a difference to the society they lived in. With the message settled 'deep' in the minds of the students, the celebrations ended with sweets, for a while though.

Jayachandran of PGP II along with a bunch of first years took to the Highway in their successful bid to add a new form to the celebrations. The first year Roadies included Arun, Elancheran, Shiju, Sarvanan and DJ.

Earlier, on 14th Night, the local network of the Institute, ‘IP Messenger’ was almost clogged to death as BIMites sent Independence Day wishes to each other along with attachments that ranged from .ppts telling about the Country to videos of the National Anthem. The Build up to the event also included students replacing their profile pictures on orkut with that of the Tricolour. Whole credit goes to Welfare Com for putting up such a great show.

BIM WITNESSES HEAVY MONSOON SHOWERS

BIM, of late, has been witnessing heavy showers, thanks to the HR club, Zetetica. The club has launched the MONSOON, which tries to improve the communication skills of the participants along with adding new dimensions to their knowledge. The tools being used are primarily Group Discussions and Debates. The event is being seen by the second year students as a platform to prepare themselves for the grilling interviews and group discussions that all of them are shortly going to face as placements approach.

The topics being discussed at the forum have been varied; RTI Act, Web blogs, Indian Industrial Dynasty to name a few. The participation has been really encouraging for the club with YLK Sir also attending a few of the sessions and providing the participants with feedback as well as adding points to the discussion.

The event was primarily targeted at PGP II students, but to the amazement of all, has been able to attract even PGP I students. There has been active participation from almost all the corners. Here’s praying that the event will help the students get their dream jobs as and when opportunity strikes. Amen!!!

COM’ CRUNCHES: PRCOM

The committee that helps in continuous strengthening up the well-established brand ‘BIM’ in the corporate world, struck again by holding up the position of site manager for indiainfoline.com for the month of July. Articles from Prof. Sunder and many students of BIM21 and BIM22 were published by the website. Also the committee has been in regular contact with the media outside by writing about and getting our events covered by the leading newspapers, the recent effort being coverage of Marwar 2006 by THE HINDU, Trichy Edition. Another major activity being undertaken by the committee has been that of providing content for the newly developed college website. With the new recruits coming in, the committee is set to "PR-ize" the Brand BIM to even a greater extent.

COM’ CRUNCHES: SYSCOM

The committee has set off everyone in fast track mode. With the introduction of databases accessible in the hostel rooms last year, the technological improvement has not stopped there. An exclusive server was allocated for the hostel computers with the allocation of 100GB space for storage. This has solved the problems with the last minute download spree from the yahoo groups. Also the storage has an e-notice folder, which has the schedule of this week and the next, which is directly updated by one of the office personnel.

The new look website (http://www.bim.edu/), designed by the Syscom’s Gayathri and unofficial member of the committee, Sankalan with the help of support staff is certainly impressive. The content coming from the alumni for the website has further improved the feel of the website and has been really encouraging. Also the committee has come up with a monthly e-magazine in the form of "KRIYA" which has been uploaded onto the college website (check out the July issue of the magazine at http://www.bim.edu/pdf/Kriya-July2006.pdf) and with the support of PR Committee is also being sent to leading MBA forums like coolavenues.com and indiainfoline.com. Some of the articles from the magazine have already been published by coolavenues.com under its ‘knowledge’ section. With the new team formed, the maintenance of the website and IT infrastructure at campus has been handed over completely to the new recruits.

Also the committee tried to some extent satisfy the otherwise insatiable demand for bandwidth. A proposal of the new connection with higher bandwidth was sought for. But this time, the students had a say in the decision making process regarding the new connection. Students seemed to be extremely delighted with the performance of the new connection (demo version) and also enjoyed to the maximum as Mr. Watchguard, the official firewall was disabled for the demo version. Everyone in the campus is hoping to see the new connection back soon as the demo period has lapsed.

COM’ CRUNCHES: MESSCOM

BIM Mess has noticeably changed for the past one year with various renovations being carried out. The wash area has been extended; the area for the evening snacks is also being renovated. Inside the kitchen, a new separate provision for preparing BIMites’ favourite toasts with omelettes and a new stove for quicker cooking has been provided. According to our sources, behind these improvements, there has been continuous and active participation from each and every MessCom member with the support of the Mess staff. Well, this is not the first time when all of the MessCom members have successfully taken up their responsibilities. They did an excellent job during the summer and executive placements last year.

Not only that, the BIM 22 MessCom have contributed to the welfare of their Mess members by opening an RD account of Rs.500 per head funded by the management. They have also been contributing to the Educational Fund in order to help the mess members’ children get education with each student contributing Rs.5 every month. The educational fund was started off in the month of April 2006. The BIMites also have had the taste of delicacies of crab and prawns. This was also the first time when the girls of BIM 22 were allowed to prepare BHEL PURI for the LH Night party, with full cooperation from the mess members.

BIM 22 MessCom are done with the selection process of the prospective members for the Mess Committee of BIM 23. This is one committee that had most rigorous selection process with three phases involving a GD, 4 Case studies followed with Personal Interviews. 10 candidates have finally been selected to the new committee who will carry on the legacy of Mess-Com.

‘COM’ CRUNCHES: FINCLUB

BULLS AND BEARS 2006

This year’s game was modified from last year’s version to make the game more interesting and lively. The groups are assigned with guides from PGP-II for better participation and good learning. MARHABA MARHABA!!!

Trichy, 9th August: It was time to welcome the batch of BIM 23 and get them partying. The Fresher Party given by BIM 22 to the fatchas of BIM 23 was yet another memorable event. The event was organized by the KALAICOM on 24th of July, and started off with a bang. The theme for the gala night was inspired by the famous Arabian Nights and aptly titled ‘MARHABA’, which in Arabic means ‘HELLO’.

The fresher parties in BIM have always been famous for title hunts. This time it was the turn of Aladdin and Jasmine to find their respective identities in BIM23. The preliminaries for selecting the prospective contenders for the titles were held 2 days before the D-day, which comprised of treasure hunt and other team performances. Based on their performance, final participants were selected.

Before rallying for the carnival, the students of PGP 1 and PGP2 treated their taste buds with sumptuous dinner in the mess. Once again the chemistry between the two ‘com’s namely Kalaicom and Messcom worked really well.

The program commenced with a prayer song followed by speeches given by Prof Sundar, Prof Jawahar, Prof Sriraman, Prof Raghavendra and Prof Prasanna.

The amusement sparked off with a spectacular dance performance by the girls of BIM22. Then the title hunt started with the announcement of participants in pairs. They introduced themselves and ramp walked. All this time the panel of judges for the night comprising of – Arun Chacko, Gayathri, Vinod and Suprabhat was evaluating their each step and every word.

The second round was the Talent round, which was elimination one. Every participant had to impress the judges with their spontaneity to the weird and not so weird questions that the judges kept on bombarding them with. While the judges were still compiling the results for the second round, the audience was once again engrossed with a magical dance performance by the girls and guys of PGP 2. The third round was ‘adapt tunes’ in which the contenders had to match their steps and coordinate with their respective partners. The ‘adapt tunes’ were very BIM like with a hint of humour. Later came the much-needed entertainment in the form of a humorous musical skit, which made the audience roar into laughter. This was the skit ‘Munna Anna’ already popular with the BIMites. The tone of the skit was very well carried on by the talented set of actors of PGP2. It was followed by an awe-inspiring performance by Aravind of PGP2 who blended fire with music.

Then the fourth round of the title hunt resumed, in which the participants were asked to convince the judges "Why the only life boat available on a sinking Titanic should be given to his/her respective partner and not to oneself". The replies were clever and witty. The final round of the title hunt had the participants take stand on whether the curfew for girls should be removed or advanced. The girls had to speak against the topic and the guys had to do for it. The next section was all about the introduction of members of various committees. The judges announced the much-awaited results of the title hunt. Finally, Archana and Partibhan secured the titles of Jasmine and Aladdin respectively. The still night stirred up with a bang on the dance floor at around 12 .30 a.m. With the party hard crowd dancing to the tunes till 3.00 a.m., the fun-filled hours came to a still with the wee hours calling in the close of the jamboree. The students of PGP II and I left to their cells, leaving the Eastern Gardens still linger with the scent of celebration of MARHABA.

PRE-PLACEMENT RECRUITMENTS AT BIM

Trichy, 9th August: With the newcomers settling in, PGP 2 has started their hunt to carry on their legacy. Though ‘PLA’COM had a tough time explaining people that their abbreviation was PLACEMENT COMMITTEE and had nothing to do with sport activities, they set the stage afire by picking their 10, after a gruelling 4 days process. Once done, the arena was open for all other clubs & committees to recruit their new team. All possible HR techniques learnt from HRM, OB were set into action during the process, right from giving in the job specification, job descriptions to conducting structured and unstructured interviews. This year, it was unanimously decided and accepted by BIM22 that no student could join more than one committee sparing Radiance, thus giving opportunity for most of the student to work in a team and bring the best out of them for BIM. With almost all the new clubs formed, BIM23 too has matched the pace by selecting their STUDENTS COUNCIL. We all are expecting the new teams to keep up to their fellow mates expectations.
