BIM Family Rocks in Bangalore

Special Feature By
Mr. Hari (BIM15), Mr. Prasanna (BIM19), Ms. Sowparnika (BIM19) & Mr. Sakthi Kumar (BIM20)

Bangalore, 20-02-2006: What an evening it turned out to be... We had around 115 alumni attending the BIM Alumni Get-together in Bangalore on February 18th, 2006. It was an expectedly huge turnout with representation from almost all batches. Most of the alumni had brought their families along.

At the outset, we would like to thank Dr. Sriram for taking part in this fun event along with us, Sharing his BIM moments, taking part in games and even blindfolding himself to take part in one of the games. While addressing everyone, he happily said, "I am also a BIM alumnus".

We thank our director, Prof. M. Sankaran, for taking his day off to be with us and taking us through his memories, both as an alumnus and as the director of the institute.

We had around 10 games, classified into group games, individual games, games for the couples & games for the kids.

We started the evening with an Ice Breaker game where we were divided into groups (with coloured bands in our hands), focussed on winning the prizes, getting to know the senior / junior in the team, making friends, having animated conversations with little kids... we could see them all :-). There were batch wise introductions with many of the classmates, meeting each other after a long time.

The event started by 6 PM and went on till 11 PM. The dance floor was open soon after the dinner by 8 PM and soon we could see how all BIMites missed BIM. Guys, gals, Kids, couples, everyone started dancing on and on and on! The DJ kept us jumping to his tunes with tracks from Hindi, Tamil, English and Telugu songs.

There were groups of alumni helping themselves to the food and catching up with their friends after a long time. They would come in to dance for their favourite tunes (Old memories die hard :-)) and then go back to continue their chat.

It’s difficult to describe the events on that evening, but it turned out to be one of the best evenings for the BIM alumni at Bangalore with huge representation across the industry and across the batches, everyone could feel proud to be associated with this group.

We had arranged for sponsors for this event. Ford Motors, Reebok, Standard Chartered & DNA Football (a start-up from the 19th batch alumni) had sponsored this get together. Above all this, we had an excellent support from the present Alumni Association Office bearers. Thanks Jose, Sudhakar, GnanaPrakash...!!!

One of the greatest outcomes of this event, we were able to track a lot of BIM alumni across Bangalore, who were missing in the action for a long time. Some of you might be surprised to know that one of your classmates is here. Do drop in a mail with your contact details to one of us (contact details below) and we will send you the details of your class mates.

Let’s have more such events in the future to bring us more as a family and work for a common cause...BIM!

Cheers,

Hari - 15th batch: hari@utiventurefunds.com
Prasanna - 19th batch: spprasu@yahoo.co.in
Sowparnika - 19th batch: sowparnika.babu@caritor.com
Sakthi Kumar - 20th batch: sakthi.kumar@symphonysv.com

Health Management – new buzzword in LH!!!

Trichy, 18-02-2006: After enough of persuasion of the management by the members of SportsCom, the new Gymnasium in the BIM Ladies Hostel has come into place. Hats off to SportsCom and to the lasses of BIM for the zeal and enthusiasm shown by them.

Surely, Girls Yearn for Management (GYM), depicting the contemporary nature of the new age woman. Once again proving the age-old saying, ‘Healthy mind in Healthy body’, girls in the Ladies Hostel have started working-out right from the next day of the arrival of the equipment.

This Gym boasts of modern equipment, which are about eight in number. The training campaign is being taken care of by the one and only Nandini Perumal, popularly known as Nandy and as per the latest information, there are quite a number of girls who are following this instructor to make themselves fit and fine.

Not heavy weight champions, but expectations are high on that this new GYM will definitely be successful in serving its purpose. And of course there are no gains without pains.

This newly established GYM is yet to be inaugurated officially by our beloved Director and that golden moment is eagerly awaited.

Once a Student, Now an Inspiration

Trichy, 19-02-2006: One of our most favoured alumni, Mr. Raja Shanmugam, VP of Testing and Practice, Mindtree, was back on campus. Needing no introduction, he started off with his agenda of the day, a two hour long counselling session on “Careers in the IT Sector”. He quickly took us (PGP- I) through a roller coaster ride of the career path he took, from the day he stepped out of BIM. He shared the burden of enlightening us with his colleague, Mr. Chetan Raj, who told us how he started of as an apprentice in Taj and ended up as a Senior HR executive in Mindtree.

Although, he ended up shattering the hearts of the hardcore finance guys, that there wasn’t much for them to do in IT industry other than the business analyst role, Mr. Raja ended the session answering a few questions posed by the anxious students.

‘COM’ Crunches

Trichy, 20-02-2006: This column will feature the initiatives taken by various Committees selected, elected, & which were expected to perish exponentially with time, but have survived to merit an exclusive column in BNA.

BisMarc
The creators of the Great War of BIM, Bismarc, assures ‘New sense Guaranteed’ through their everyday news bits of BIZBUZZ, featuring the outside world rumblings. Initially premièred five minutes before the class with apparently no audience, the organisers have finally found out a solution to the problem. The recent versions of the event were timed during the breaks, and were successful in waking BIMites from their one hour long deep slumber. Some amount of brainstorming happens after the BIZBUZZ as the “LOGON” tries to squeeze the little bit of RAM BIMites have in their heads to guess the logo as each box opens up. Keep up the good work, guys!!!

Hoping for the continuous support,
The New BNA Team.

Yudha Vidhya 2006 Final Day

Trichy, 15-02-2006: It was a day of surprises for the participants of Yudha Vidhya 2006. After the heady experience of handling lakhs of rupees, managing mammoth corporates, building and acquiring assets worth tons of money and making decisions affecting entire industries, the participants of Yudha Vidhya came back to mundane real world affairs with no visible hangovers.

The students of PGP 1 who participated in this business simulation game were all of the unanimous opinion that Yudha Vidhya was a really interesting and entertaining avenue of learning. The organizers were also happy that the objective of this activity had been attained. There is another event, BIMEX, scheduled to start after the mid-term examinations. This Stock Market simulation game is also expected to provide a satisfying learning experience.

On day 1, there were 19 teams. After the elimination rounds on the first day, the top 10 teams were selected. Kriya was on top in day 1. They went into the final day as the favourites to win the title. On the final day, the 10 teams were put through gruelling simulations of eight quarters.

The day started off with the Director, Prof. M. Sankaran and Dr. Y. Lakshman Kumar addressing the finalists. Then the teams were allotted seating positions and new names. The final day’s quarters saw a see-saw contest in progress.

Each quarter’s result was announced before the start of the next quarter. Every quarter produced a different team enjoying a slight lead over the others. The students also participated in this contest with utmost professionalism. One of the teams even designed a corporate logo and displayed it on their team’s worksheets. The excellent work done by Dimpi Tejani of team Six Sigma was widely appreciated.

In the end it turned out to be a close finish. Team Kriya consistently outperformed its competitors and kept bettering market expectations. Kriya ran into difficulties when two of its five members had to retire citing poor health. But their gritty determination and their consultant saw them through. The effort of all the teams was laudable. A few teams also had bitter experiences when human error on the part of the organizers led to their falling out of the lead. The BNA congratulates the winners.

The enterprising FinClub members of PGP 1 who were part of the organizing team worked hard to make it a memorable event. They also learnt a lot about event management and crisis handling. They deserve to be specially congratulated. The PGP 2 members of FinClub who actively involved themselves in the conduct of the event in spite of a tight schedule also need to be specially thanked for providing the juniors with the fulfilling experience of participating in a competition and completing it without any hitches.

There were 19 teams from PGP 1 comprising a maximum of 6 members per team. The enthusiastic participation was a shot in the arm for the organizers. It was evident from the professional way in which the inaugural session was handled that a great deal of planning had gone into the preparations for this event. The complex process was flawlessly executed.

Yudha Vidhya 2006 was inaugurated by the Director, Prof. M. Sankaran in a brief ceremony. In his address to the gathered students, the director emphasized that it was in events like Yudha Vidhya, BIMEX and MarWar that the students actually had a chance to implement the theoretical knowledge they had gathered. After the Director’s speech, Hemant Sethia, FinClub member of PGP 2, made a detailed presentation to the audience about the event. He covered the required ground exhaustively. Then the teams were announced and the first day’s materials were distributed to the teams. A sample of what was expected of the teams was explained to the PGP 1 members. Then followed a question-answer session where the questions raised by the participants were answered by the event organizers.

After that, the teams were moved over to the classrooms where the appropriate seating arrangements for the teams had already been made. There they started on the work for the day. Most of the teams made use of laptop computers while a few had scientific calculators as their only aid. After an interesting session, Kriya was announced as the winner for the day.

A Brief History of the BIM News Agency

The BIM News Agency is the news network that provides the alumni of Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy with campus updates. Its activities encompass the coverage of campus happenings, committee activities, student profiles and other BIM related events. It helps the alumni to rekindle memories, relive BIM and keep in touch with life in BIM.

The BIM News Agency was born on April 2, 2005. It started off as a free newsletter to the 21st Batch of students in Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy. After a few months, the enormous potential of this new tool was realized. On August 8, 2005, there was a paradigm shift in policy and the BNA became a subscription based news service for alumni from all batches of BIM. From then there has been no turning back. Today, the BNA reaches BIMites from Batch 1 to Batch 22.

The alumni response to the BNA has been really good. They are all appreciative of the good work being done. They also love to hear from their alma mater. The administration of Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy has been very appreciative.
